Water softener salt:
what to buy, how much, and why it bridges

One bag looks the same as the next on the pallet. The purity number on the label is what decides how often you end up with a shovel in the brine tank.

Buy evaporated pellets or high-purity solar crystals: both leave almost no sediment. A family of four typically uses one to two 40-pound bags of water softener salt a month. Keep the tank half full, never brim-full.

What kind of salt for a water softener, and why purity is the whole story

Every bag on the shelf is sodium chloride. What separates them is what else came along for the ride. A softener does not consume the salt directly — it dissolves it into a strong brine, and that brine strips hardness minerals off the resin beads and flushes them down the drain. Anything in the bag that will not dissolve simply stays behind. High-purity product runs 99.6% to 99.9% sodium chloride and leaves a film you would barely notice over a year. Rock salt, mined straight out of the ground, can carry two or three percent insoluble grit. That sounds trivial until you multiply it by the twenty bags you feed the unit annually, and you are kneeling next to the tank with a wet-dry vacuum. Purity is not a marketing number here. It is a maintenance schedule.

Rock vs solar vs evaporated vs pellets

Those four words describe two separate things, which is why the aisle is confusing. Rock, solar, and evaporated describe where the salt came from. Rock salt is mined. Solar salt is seawater or brine left in shallow ponds until the sun drives the water off. Evaporated salt is brine boiled down under controlled heat, which is the most thorough of the three. Pellets, crystals, and blocks describe the shape it was pressed into afterward. So an evaporated pellet and a solar crystal can both be excellent, and a cheap rock salt in pellet form is still rock salt. Match the form to your cabinet: fine-mesh resin units and narrow brine wells generally do better on uniform pellets, which pack less tightly and bridge less often than loose crystals. Blocks are the outlier: they dissolve slowly and suit only the cabinet units built around them.

Prices above are typical retail ranges, not measured figures — they move with region, season, and pallet quantity, and warehouse-club pricing usually lands under the bottom of each band. Treat them as a sanity check on what you are being quoted, not a quote. Purity figures are the levels manufacturers publish for each grade rather than anything measured here, and individual bags vary within a grade. The trap in this table is reading the left column as a value ranking: rock salt genuinely is the cheapest way to put sodium chloride in a tank, and if you do not mind a cleanout every couple of years, it does the job. What the higher grades buy is your time and a brine tank you can ignore. Work out which of those two you are actually short of, because that decides the row for you far more reliably than the price per bag does.

How much salt does a water softener use?

Three numbers drive it: your hardness in grains per gallon, how much water the house runs through the unit, and how the control valve decides to regenerate. A metered valve counts gallons and only regenerates when the resin is genuinely close to exhausted. A timer valve regenerates on a calendar whether you were home that week or not, and that difference alone can swing consumption by a third. For a rough sanity check, multiply people in the house by daily gallons, multiply that by your grains per gallon, and you have the grains of hardness the unit removes per day. Compare it to the grain capacity on your nameplate. If your consumption is wildly above what that math suggests, look at the salt dose setting and the regeneration frequency before you blame the salt itself.

Sudden jumps are diagnostic. A unit that quietly used a bag a month for three years and now wants three is telling you something: a stuck valve cycling repeatedly, a leaking toilet flapper inflating your metered gallon count, or resin fouled by iron so it needs far more brine to recover the same capacity. That last one is common on well supplies. If your water has both hardness and iron, the fix is upstream of the softener, not in the brine tank. Iron-fighting salt blends help at the margins, but they are a supplement to an iron filter, never a replacement for one, and pouring them into a badly fouled tank mostly just costs you more per bag for the same weak result. Salt bridging: why a full tank can still make hard water

A bridge is a hard crust that forms across the tank, holding the salt above the water it is supposed to be dissolving into. Underneath is an air gap. The unit draws brine, gets mostly water, regenerates weakly, and your showers start feeling different — all while the tank looks reassuringly full through the lid. Humidity and overfilling are the usual causes, which is why basements and garages in humid climates see it most, and why filling to the brim is a bad habit rather than a thrifty one. To check, push a broom handle straight down until it stops. If it hits a shelf with hollow space below, work the handle around to break the crust into pieces and let them drop into the water. Keep clear of the brine well tube while you do it.

Prevention is duller than the fix and works better. Let the level drop to a few inches above the water before you add a bag, so old salt is not sitting packed and damp at the bottom for a year. Buy in quantities you will actually use in a couple of months rather than stacking a pallet in a damp garage. Break up the top layer with the handle once a season as a habit. And if bridging keeps coming back on the same unit despite all of that, switch to uniform evaporated pellets — they resist caking noticeably better than loose crystals in the same conditions, which is exactly why cabinet-style softeners tend to specify them. Which bag to actually buy

Two questions decide it. First: pellet or crystal — pellets resist bridging better and are the safer default for cabinet-style softeners, while crystals are the cheaper all-rounder for a standard resin tank on ordinary city water. Second: does the household need something beyond plain sodium chloride — iron in the supply, or a sodium-free bag for a restricted diet. Start with the mainstream pellet unless one of those two applies.

Sodium-free is the fourth option, and it comes with two real catches. First, potassium chloride costs materially more per pound than sodium chloride — that price gap is the main reason most buyers reject it once they see the shelf tag. Second, the bag below ships as a two-bag pack, 80 lb total — comparing its price against a single 40 lb sodium bag would be doubly misleading, since you are buying twice the weight in one purchase.

Salt-free alternatives: what they actually do

Template-assisted crystallisation and similar salt-free conditioners do not soften water. They change the form dissolved calcium takes, so it is far less inclined to bond to pipe walls and heating elements. Test the treated water and the hardness number is unchanged, because nothing was removed — there is no brine, no drain line, no bag to carry. That is the genuine appeal, along with leaving no sodium in the water and wasting none to regeneration. What you give up is everything downstream of actually removing hardness: the slick feel, the drop in soap and detergent use, no more spots on the glassware. Decide by what you are solving. Scale protection on a rental or a tight utility closet argues for salt-free. What kind of salt is best for a water softener?

Evaporated pellets or high-purity solar crystals are the safest default. Both run above 99% sodium chloride, so they leave very little insoluble residue in the brine tank. Rock salt is the cheapest per bag but carries the most sediment, which settles in the bottom of the tank and eventually needs to be shovelled out. Check your owner's manual first: some cabinet-style and fine-mesh resin units specifically call for pellets, and a few manufacturers void warranty coverage if rock salt is used.

How many bags of salt does a water softener use per month?

A typical family of four on moderately hard municipal water goes through roughly one to two 40-pound bags a month. The real drivers are your grains-per-gallon hardness, how much water the house uses, and whether the control valve regenerates on a timer or on metered demand. Timer-based valves regenerate whether or not the resin is exhausted, so they usually burn noticeably more. If you are emptying a bag a week in a two-person house, something is wrong with the settings.

Can I mix different types of softener salt in the same tank?

You can, but there is little upside and one real downside. Mixing rock salt into a tank that has been running clean pellets introduces the sediment you were avoiding, and the two dissolve at different rates, which makes brine strength less predictable. If you want to switch types, the cleanest path is to run the tank down low, clear out any residue at the bottom, then refill with the new salt. Avoid switching back and forth season to season.

How do I know if I have a salt bridge?

The tank looks full but your water starts feeling hard again. Push a broom handle straight down into the salt: if it stops on a hard shelf with hollow space underneath, that is a bridge. The crust is holding the salt up out of the water, so the unit is regenerating with weak brine or none at all. Break the crust up with the handle, taking care not to strike the brine well tube, and let the loose salt drop into the water.

Do salt-free water conditioners actually work?

They work at a different job. Template-assisted crystallisation and similar systems change how dissolved calcium behaves so it is less likely to stick to pipe and heater surfaces. They do not remove hardness minerals, so a hardness test on the treated water reads the same as it did going in, and you will not get the slick feel or the soap savings of ion exchange. If your goal is scale protection without salt handling or a drain line, they are a reasonable option. If your goal is soft water, they are not a substitute.

Should I add potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride?

Potassium chloride works in the same ion-exchange process and puts potassium into the treated water instead of sodium, which some owners prefer for garden irrigation or for dietary reasons. The trade-offs are cost — it typically runs several times the price per pound — and efficiency, since many manufacturers recommend raising the salt dose to get equivalent softening. Anyone managing a medical condition that restricts either sodium or potassium should raise it with their doctor rather than deciding from a spec sheet.

Is it bad to let the brine tank run completely empty?

It will not damage the softener, but you lose soft water until you refill and the unit runs a full regeneration cycle, which usually takes a couple of hours. Keeping the level a few inches above the water line is the practical target — enough that you never run dry, not so much that old salt sits packed and damp at the bottom for a year. Filling a tank to the brim is one of the most common causes of bridging.
