This is the 230V wind of Red Lion's 1/2 HP, 12 GPM 4-inch submersible — the common residential replacement. Before the spec sheet matters at all, one question decides whether this is even the right item number: what's already run to your well. What it is
The RL12G05-2W2V is Red Lion's 230-volt, 2-wire 4-inch submersible deep well pump — item number 14942402. It is one of two identical pump ends in Red Lion's RL series wound for different voltages: this one and the RL12G05-2W1V at 115V. Same 1/2 HP motor, same 12 GPM output, same 212 ft shut-off — the only thing that changes between the two item numbers is the voltage the motor windings are built for and the amperage that results.

Reading your existing wiring before you order
This is the decision this specific item number exists to serve, and it has nothing to do with pump quality. Open your electrical panel and look at the breaker feeding the well circuit. A 230V circuit uses a double-pole breaker — it takes up two slots with one handle tying them together, and two hot conductors (often colored black and red) run to the well. A 115V circuit uses a single-pole breaker and one hot conductor. If you are replacing a failed pump rather than wiring a new well from scratch, matching the replacement to what is already in the ground and at the panel is almost always cheaper than converting the circuit.
Most residential wells built or rewired in the last few decades run 230V, which is why Red Lion lists this item as the common residential replacement in its own catalog. Older or smaller installations — cabins, seasonal properties, outbuildings without a 230V service — are the exception, and that is exactly the case the 115V version is built for.
Why 6A at 230V matters more than the horsepower number
Both the 230V and 115V versions of this pump deliver the identical 1/2 HP and 12 GPM — the HP rating tells you almost nothing about which one to buy. What changes is amp draw: Red Lion's spec sheet lists 6A running current at 230V against 12A at 115V for the same output, because power (watts) stays constant while current halves as voltage doubles. Lower amperage at a given power means less voltage drop over the length of wire between the panel and the pump — a real consideration on a well with a long conductor run from the house to the wellhead, since the National Electrical Code's allowance for voltage drop is expressed as a percentage of circuit length and current, not a flat number.
Practically: if you are running new wire to a well that is any real distance from the panel, the 230V pump lets you use a lighter wire gauge for the same run length before drop becomes a problem, or a longer run at the same gauge. If the well is close to the panel and the circuit is short, the difference matters far less — which is one more reason existing wiring should decide this, not a wiring-from-scratch preference.
2-wire vs 3-wire: what you actually give up
This item is a 2-wire design — the starting capacitor and relay live inside the motor housing rather than a separate control box mounted near the pressure tank. That is a real install simplification: one fewer enclosure to wire, mount, and eventually service at the surface, and one fewer point of surface-level failure. The trade-off is diagnostic, not structural — a 3-wire pump lets a technician swap a failed control box at the surface in minutes as a first troubleshooting step; with a 2-wire pump, that starting circuitry is downhole with the motor. In practice this matters less than it sounds: on either design, if the motor windings themselves fail, the pump comes out of the well on the drop pipe regardless of wire count, and that labor — not the wire count — is the dominant cost of any deep well pump failure.
Sizing: depth drives cost, not the pump price tag
Before ordering either voltage, get two numbers from your well record or a driller: static water level (where the water sits when the pump is off) and drawdown (how far that level falls under pumping load). Your effective lift is static level plus drawdown plus the elevation from the wellhead to the pressure tank — check that total against the 212 ft shut-off ceiling with margin, not against it exactly, since flow falls as head rises and you want usable GPM at your actual depth, not zero flow at the limit.
This is also why well depth, not pump price, dominates a well pump replacement's total cost. The pump itself is a few hundred dollars either way. Pulling it — whether for replacement or for a warranty failure — means hauling every foot of drop pipe out of the casing before the old pump comes off the end, and running it back in after. A pump at 300 ft costs meaningfully more in labor to service than the identical pump at 80 ft, independent of which item number you bought.
The 4-inch casing requirement is non-negotiable in the other direction: this pump physically will not fit a well casing narrower than 4 inches inside diameter. Measure before you order — a pump that does not fit the casing is not a returnable inconvenience, it is a wasted trip down the well.

Read the amp-draw row as the real decision point. If you are wiring new or converting an existing circuit and have the choice, 230V is the lower-current, lower-drop option for the identical pump. Who shouldn't buy this one
Anyone with only a 115V circuit at the wellhead. Buying the 230V item and expecting it to run on a single-pole 115V circuit will not work — the motor windings are built for the higher voltage. Confirm your breaker and conductor count first, or budget for an electrician to convert the circuit if you specifically want the lower-amperage 230V pump.

Questions buyers actually ask
How do I know if my well pump is wired for 230V or 115V?
Look at the breaker feeding the pump circuit at your electrical panel. A 230V (also called 240V) circuit uses a double-pole breaker — one that occupies two slots and has a single handle tying two breakers together, fed by two hot conductors (commonly black and red) plus a neutral or ground depending on the era of the install. A 115V circuit uses a single-pole breaker with one hot conductor. If you are replacing an existing pump, the safest confirmation is matching the new pump's voltage to the wire count and breaker type already in place, or having an electrician verify before you order — swapping voltage typically means rewiring the drop cable and the breaker, not just the pump.
Does the Red Lion RL12G05-2W2V need a control box?
No. Red Lion's product page lists this as a 2-wire motor design, and 2-wire submersible pumps carry their starting components inside the motor housing rather than in a separate above-ground control box. That removes one component from the install and one more thing that can fail at the surface. It does not change what happens if the motor itself fails below ground — 2-wire or 3-wire, a failed submersible motor still has to be pulled out of the well on the drop pipe.
What does 212 ft shut-off head actually limit?
Shut-off head is the maximum vertical lift the pump can produce before flow drops to zero — it is not the maximum well depth. Red Lion's spec sheet also states the pump is intended for wells to 250 feet, but at greater depths the achievable flow rate falls off well before the 212 ft shut-off point. What matters for sizing is your static water level plus drawdown plus any elevation to the pressure tank, checked against Red Lion's flow-vs-head curve, not just the single 212 ft number in isolation.
Is the 230V or 115V Red Lion RL12G05 the better buy?
Neither is categorically better — they are the same pump wound for a different voltage, and the decision is dictated by what is already run to your well, not by pump quality. If you have or can run a 230V circuit, it draws half the amperage (6A vs 12A) for the same output, which typically means less voltage drop over long conductor runs.
