A well pump is the component in a private water supply that actually moves water — everything else in the system exists to store or control the pressure it creates. Get the pump right and the rest is plumbing; get it wrong and no tank or switch fixes it.

Submersible vs. jet: two ways to move the same water

A jet pump sits above ground and pulls water up through suction — it lowers pressure at its inlet and lets atmospheric pressure push the water column up a pipe. That method has a hard physical ceiling: at sea level the theoretical limit is near 33 feet, and friction plus cavitation margin bring the practical working limit to roughly 25 feet of static water level. No amount of horsepower changes that number, because the pump isn't pulling harder, it's running out of atmosphere to push with.

A submersible pump inverts the approach entirely: the sealed motor and stacked impeller stages hang in the water at the bottom of the casing and push from below. Because it pushes rather than sucks, there's no 25-foot wall — depth is handled by adding pump stages, not by hoping suction holds. That's why virtually every well deeper than about 25 feet to water uses a submersible, and why most new residential wells use one regardless of depth: being underwater keeps the motor cool and nearly silent, and it's not exposed to freezing in an unheated space.

Sizing a well pump: depth and flow, not horsepower alone

Horsepower is the number people fixate on and the least useful one on its own. A pump is sized against a curve that trades flow (GPM) against total dynamic head — the higher it has to push, the less it delivers at the top. Two identical-horsepower pumps can perform completely differently at 100 feet versus 300 feet. Get the inputs right and the curve tells you the right pump; guess, and you either starve the house during peak use or pay for capacity you'll never use.

Why the pump can't be judged alone

A well pump does not run continuously — it fills a pressure tank until a switch cuts it off, then sits idle while the tank's stored pressure supplies the house, until pressure drops enough for the switch to cut back in. That means a pump can be perfectly healthy and still short-cycle itself to an early death because the tank lost its air charge, or sit there doing nothing while a bad switch keeps the circuit open. Symptoms genuinely overlap between all three parts, which is exactly why so many homeowners buy a new pump when the actual fault was a $200 tank.

What actually drives replacement cost

No installed price is quoted here — real, sourced figures live on what it really costs. But the mechanism is worth understanding before you call anyone: depth is the dominant cost driver, and it's a labor problem, not a parts problem. Replacing a basement jet pump is bolt-up work — isolate, drain, unbolt, fit, prime. Replacing a submersible means physically pulling every foot of drop pipe and wire out of the casing before the new pump goes back in, keeping it off the ground so the well isn't contaminated in the process. That labor scales directly with depth: a pump at 400 feet costs more to pull than one at 100 feet, independent of what the pump itself costs. This is also why a well contractor, not a plumber, is the right call for anything submersible — it's rig work, and it's regulated in most states.
